Did You Know, Chiropractic Care Improves Your Heart Rate Variability?

You have all heard me talk about the awesome health benefits of chiropractic care, and as you may already know the list is long! Chiropractors are great at alleviating muscular pain, joint pain, back aches, but there is so much more to it! Initially, you may seek out a chiropractor for musculoskeletal issues, but you will quickly notice and experience the profound effects of a chiropractic adjustment in relation to your heart rate variability and nervous system!

Some may experience better quality of sleep, others may notice their vertigo is gone, maybe even your anxiety levels have decreased, or the debilitating brain fog no longer compromises your whole day! Well, the good news is there is evidence to show that these outcomes are actually a great side effect of chiropractic care! And guess what, there is a study that proves this, based on heart rate variability testing.

So let’s take a step back, what is heart rate variability? Heart rate variability (HRV) measures the specific changes in time (or variability) between successive heart beats. Usually a low HRV, which means less variability in heart beats can indicate that the body is under stress whether that be from exercise, an emotional stress, a chemical stress or any other internal or external stressors.  A higher HRV, or greater variability between heart beats, usually indicates that he body has a strong ability to adapt better to stress or tolerates everyday stresses more efficiently.

Basically, calculating a person's heart rate variability is a great way to analyze and measure their autonomic nervous system!  Our autonomic nervous system is in charge of every automatic process in the body such as breathing, digesting, stress response, blood pressure, sweat response, blood sugar and so much more! So regulating your HRV to maintain a healthy functioning autonomic nervous system is crucial for your overall health and well-being! Based on the study linked below, patients receiving continuous chiropractic care showed substantial improvement in their heart rate variability! Which means, chiropractic care can have a tremendous impact on the overall health of their nervous system. This is why you don’t necessarily need to be in pain or dealing with a dysfunction to go see a chiropractor! No wonder so many of my patients experience better sleep, better digestive health, and lower stress levels - this stuff actually works!
